The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Panda — sixty years of the most recognised chronograph dial in Rolex’s catalogue Rolex introduced the Cosmograph Daytona in 1963, named after the Daytona International Speedway and designed to meet the needs of professional racing drivers. The white dial with black chronograph subdials — the configuration collectors have called the “Panda” since the vintage era — arrived early in the Daytona’s production history and has remained the model’s defining aesthetic across every generation that followed. The Panda name is a collector’s term, never Rolex’s. It refers to the visual contrast of a white dial against the three black chronograph counter rings, which recall the black and white markings of a giant panda. Every subsequent white-dial Daytona in Oystersteel has inherited the name: the aluminium-bezel 6263 and 6265 of the 1970s and 1980s, the Zenith-movement 16520, the first in-house 116520 with Calibre 4130, the ceramic-bezel 116500LN, and now the 126500LN — the current generation with Calibre 4131 and the updated 2023 case.
