The Rolex Datejust 36 reference 16233 in Oystersteel and 18k yellow gold with the black vignette diamond dial. The 16233 was introduced in 1988, and this R serial example comes from that very first year of production, the generation that brought the sapphire crystal and quickset date to the two-tone Datejust. Vignette dials, which fade from a lighter centre out to a deep black edge, were a short-lived factory option from this era, and their dramatic gradient has made them a favourite with collectors of vintage Datejusts. The black vignette dial is set with factory diamond hour markers that sparkle against the gradient, with the date under the Cyclops lens at 3 o'clock. The 18k yellow gold fluted bezel and the two-tone Jubilee bracelet give it that classic, unmistakable Datejust look, dressy enough for the evening and easy to wear every day.
