Rolex needed an automatic chronograph movement and didn’t have one, so they took Zenith’s legendary El Primero and rebuilt it into the calibre 4030. That partnership only lasted around a decade before Rolex brought it in-house, and it makes these five-digit Daytonas a genuine chapter of the story rather than just another reference. This one is the 16523 in steel and gold with a less common black diamond dial, and it’s aged the way you hope one of these does. Condition is exceptional, and the gold is forming a gorgeous warm patina to it so you know its condition is honest. It’s black dial with diamond markers against that mellowed gold is an extremely attractive watch! Watch only, priced accordingly. For the collector who wants the Daytona with the better backstory.
