Rolex Datejust 36 Wimbledon Dial— the original Datejust size The Datejust was introduced in 1945 as the first self-winding wristwatch to display the date in a window, and the 36mm case is its original and defining proportion. It preceded the 41mm by decades, and it remains the size that most accurately reads as a Datejust — balanced, versatile, neither oversized nor a dress watch scaled up from something smaller. The 36mm sits with equal authority on any wrist, which is why it has never been replaced, only extended. The reference 126231 is the two-tone Datejust 36 in Oystersteel and Everose gold: steel case, Everose gold fluted bezel, and a five-link two-tone Jubilee bracelet combining polished Oystersteel and Everose gold links. The Everose gold — Rolex’s proprietary rose gold alloy, formulated to resist fading over time — reads warmer and softer than yellow gold and substantially less austere than white gold. It is the most versatile of the three Datejust metal options.
