IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 — Genta’s design, reimagined The Ingenieur is one of the few luxury sports watches with an unbroken line to the golden era of integrated-bracelet design. Gérald Genta — the designer behind the Royal Oak and the Nautilus — applied the same integrated-bracelet philosophy to the IWC Ingenieur SL in 1976, producing a 40mm anti-magnetic tool watch with a distinctive round bezel secured by five polygonal screws and a bracelet that flowed directly from the case without a visible lug-to-bracelet gap. When IWC relaunched the Ingenieur in 2023, it chose to honour that 1976 design rather than reinterpret it. The Ingenieur Automatic 40 is a comprehensively re-engineered watch built around Genta’s original visual architecture — the five-screw bezel, the round case, the integrated bracelet — but updated with a manufacture movement, improved ergonomics, and dial configurations that didn’t exist in 1976.
